It is therefore not surpr- ing that the impressive advances that have been made in recent decades are paralleled by equally impressive advances in sensitivity and sophistication of physical equipment and methods. This trend started already shortly after the war, in work by pioneers like Lou Duysens, the late Stacy French, Britton Chance, Horst Witt, George Feher and others, but it really gained momentum in the seventies and especially the eighties when pulsed lasers, pulsed EPR spectrometers and solid-state electronics acquired a more and more prominent role on the scene of scientific research. This book is different from most others because it focuses on the techniques rather than on the scientific questions involved. Its purpose is three-fold, and this purpose is reflected in each chapter: (i) to give the reader sufficient insight in the basic principles of a method to understand its applications (ii) to give information on the practical aspects of the method and (iii) to discuss some of the results obtained in photosynthesis research in order to provide insight in its potentalities. We hope that in this way the reader will obtain sufficient information for a critical assessment of the relevant literature, and, perhaps more important, will gain inspiration to tackle problems in his own field of research. The book is not intended to give a comprehensive review of photosynthesis, but nevertheless offers various views on the exciting developments that are going on.
Structure and function of the components of the photosynthetic apparatus and the molecular biology of these components have become the dominant themes in advances in our understanding of the light reactions of oxygenic photosynthesis. Oxygenic Photosynthesis: The Light Reactions presents our current understanding of these reactions in thylakoid membranes.
Topics covered include the photosystems, the cytochrome b6-f complex, plastocyanin, ferredoxin, FNR, light-harvesting complexes, and the coupling factor. This conference was held in the International Agricultural Centre at Wageningen, The Netherlands, August 14 - 19, 1988, under the auspices of the European Association for Potato Research (EAPR), the Potato Association of America (PAA) and the Dutch National Council for Agricultural Research (NRLO). The length of rotations affect the performance of potato crops and yields are often reduced if rotations are too short. The kinds of crops within a rotation will also affect potato performance, especially those grown in the previous season. It was a major aim of the conference to bring together specialists of various disciplines to examine these determinants of potato yield. The Organizing Committee is glad that all relevant aspects of the theme are highlighted in these proceedings. The contents of the contributions are primarily left to the responsibility of the authors. J. Vos C.D. van Loon G.J. Bollen ORGANIZATION OF THE CONFERENCE The European Association for Potato Research (EAPR) and the Potato Association of America (PAA) nominated representatives in the Conference Committee. PAA was represented by prof. dr E.E. Ewing (Ithaca, USA) and by dr R.E. Thornton (Pullman, USA); EAPR was represented by prof. dr J.C. Holmes (Edinburgh, UK), ir C.D. van Loon (Lelystad, NL), and dr ir J. Vos (chairman; Wageningen, NL).
Excerpt from Flora of the Galapagos Islands

The bryophytes and thallophytes, as yet known to occur on the Galapagos Islands, are so few that they cannot be supposed in any adequate sense representative of the great groups to which they belong. It has, therefore, seemed best to exclude them from the tabular statistics. It may be remarked, however, that their inclusion would not have significantly altered the numerical relations presented.

About the Publisher

Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
