What can be more pleasant than to recall one's student days? My own go back to 1912 when, in Kharkov, I often heard Markov being described as "Neistovyi Andrei." This description is difficult to translate. Perhaps "Andrew the irrepressible," with the addition "who does not pull any punches." Two of the charac teristic performances of Markov are briefly described by the editor Ondar. One is Markov's fight "against reaction, backwardness and religion." The other is Markov's renunciation of "all honors and decorations he had received from the tsarist government," this in protest against the exclu sion from the Academy of A. M. Gorky, the revered writer. Now I wish to add a third item. In the tsarist regime, membership in the Imperial Academy was occa sionally conferred on high noblemen. Neistovyi Andrei did not like this and, to manifest his disapproval, composed a limerick. It was about a Duke Dundook becoming a member of the Academy, a limerick not suited for the ears of ladies! It is not likely that Markov's limerick was ever pub lished. It circulated by word of mouth. The little book edited by Ondar is very attractive. Also, I am highly appreciative of the work of the translators Charles and Margaret Stein.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0630/1089/8005/files/1_d11a1de7-c1c5-4315-9e22-1a54fcd68980.jpg?v=1781729960

On a September day in 1863, Abdul Hamid entered the Central Asian city of Yarkand. Disguised as a merchant, Hamid was actually an employee of the Survey of India, carrying concealed instruments to enable him to map the geography of the area. Hamid did not live to provide a first-hand count of his travels. Nevertheless, he was the advance guard of an elite group of Indian trans-Himalayan explorers -- recruited, trained, and directed by the officers of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India -- who were to traverse much of Tibet and Central Asia during the next thirty years.

Derek Waller presents the history of these explorers, who came to be called "native explorers" or "pundits" in the public documents of the Survey of India. In the closed files of the government of British India, however, they were given their true designation as spies. As they moved northward within the Indian subcontinent, the British demanded precise frontiers and sought orderly political and economic relationships with their neighbors. They were also becoming increasingly aware of and concerned with their ignorance of the geographical, political, and military complexion of the territories beyond the mountain frontiers of the Indian empire. This was particularly true of Tibet.

Though use of pundits was phased out in the 1890s in favor of purely British expeditions, they gathered an immense amount of information on the topography of the region, the customs of its inhabitants, and the nature of its government and military resources. They were able to travel to places where virtually no European count venture, and did so under conditions of extreme deprivation and great danger. They are responsible for documenting an area of over one million square miles, most of it completely unknown territory to the West. This research, which resulted in several published papers and technical reports (see bibliography), was motivated by some military problems, which were brought to our attention by Mr. Pete Shugart of the US Army TRADOC Systems Analysis Activity, presently called US Army TRADOC Analysis Command. The Director ofTRASANA at the time, the late Dr. Wilbur Payne, identified the problems and encouraged the support and funding of this research by the US Army. Research contracts were first administered through the Office of Naval Research, and subsequently by the Army Research Office. We are most grateful to all involved for this support and encouragement. In 1986 I administered a three-day workshop on problem solving in the area of sto chastic visibility. This workshop was held at the White Sands Missile Range facility. A set of notes with some software were written for this workshop. This workshop led to the incorporation of some of the methods discussed in the present book into the Army simulation package CASTFOREM. Several people encouraged me to extend those notes and write the present monograph on the level of those notes, so that the material will be more widely available for applications.
This fourth edition contains several additions. The main ones con cern three closely related topics: Brownian motion, functional limit distributions, and random walks. Besides the power and ingenuity of their methods and the depth and beauty of their results, their importance is fast growing in Analysis as well as in theoretical and applied Proba bility. These additions increased the book to an unwieldy size and it had to be split into two volumes. About half of the first volume is devoted to an elementary introduc tion, then to mathematical foundations and basic probability concepts and tools. The second half is devoted to a detailed study of Independ ence which played and continues to playa central role both by itself and as a catalyst. The main additions consist of a section on convergence of probabilities on metric spaces and a chapter whose first section on domains of attrac tion completes the study of the Central limit problem, while the second one is devoted to random walks. About a third of the second volume is devoted to conditioning and properties of sequences of various types of dependence. The other two thirds are devoted to random functions; the last Part on Elements of random analysis is more sophisticated. The main addition consists of a chapter on Brownian motion and limit distributions.

If you have ever looked for P-values by shopping at P mart, tried to watch the Bernoulli Trails on "People's Court," or think that the standard deviation is a criminal offense in six states, then you need The Cartoon Guide to Statistics to put you on the road to statistical literacy.

The Cartoon Guide to Statistics covers all the central ideas of modern statistics: the summary and display of data, probability in gambling and medicine, random variables, Bernoulli Trails, the Central Limit Theorem, hypothesis testing, confidence interval estimation, and much more—all explained in simple, clear, and yes, funny illustrations. This problem has been examined for centuries; perhaps no other mathematical calculation suffuses mankind's efforts at survival as amply as probability. In the dawn of the 20th century David Hilbert included the foundations of the probability calculus within the most vital mathematical problems; Dr. Rocchi's topical and ever-timely volume proposes a novel, exhaustive solution to this vibrant issue.

Paolo Rocchi, a versatile IBM scientist, outlines a new philosophical and mathematical approach inspired by well-tested software techniques. But this ignores the structure of the processes which lead to the outcomes, and the author explores how taking into account the details of the processes would lead to a more fundamental understanding of the nature of probability. This is an interesting idea, and the author makes it clear that at present this is a work in process and not yet a finished product, for he says that he has tried to give "an impulse in the right direction" with his theory. ...
