This remark, which is true even Of modern French, applies with additional truth to'the older classical writers. The Editor knows of no attempt that has yet been made in this country to explain any one of the classical French authors as our students really need to have them explained. In this edition of The Cid, the Editor has endeavored to supply this want for the language of Corneille, an author, let him confess, Whose writings he has foundto be almost a closed book to the majority of his students, in any Of the editions to which thus far they could have access.

The object Of this edition is, therefore, entirely practical and Mutational. To bring the language of Cornellle within the reach of his own students, and of others like them, has been the Editor's immediate motive. The actual wants Of such students, such as his own experience has shown those wants to be, he has endeavored to bear in mind in every part of his work. Beyond these wants, except for the interest and incitement of the student him self, he has not thought it necessary to go. This does not.
